Skyline Radio Celebrates 37 Years of Broadcasting
A Legacy of Sound Spirit and Community in Wolverhampton
In 1988 a new sound rose from the heart of Wolverhampton a sound that would go on to define the voice of a generation That sound was Skyline Radio founded by visionary broadcaster and community leader Ness Ivor Smith
At a time when the airwaves were dominated by mainstream voices and Caribbean culture was largely absent from British radio Ness Ivor Smith saw an urgent need for change With deep community spirit and limited resources he and a small circle of passionate individuals including the late great Dread Lester Lester Samuels created a station that would bring reggae unity and pride to the citys Black community
From those modest beginnings Skyline Radio has grown into one of the UKs longestrunning Black community radio stations a voice of heritage education and resilience that continues to thrive 37 years later
