British Reggae: A WINDRUSH LEGACY Past, Present and Future
On 29 March 2026, a landmark cultural event will take place in Wolverhampton, celebrating the enduring influence of British Reggae and its deep connection to the Windrush generation. British Reggae: A Windrush Legacy is a one-day national conference dedicated to exploring the history, cultural impact, and future direction of reggae music in Britain and beyond.
Emerging from the experiences of Caribbean migrants who arrived in the UK from the late 1940s onwards, British reggae became more than just a musical genre. It evolved into a powerful expression of identity, resistance, creativity, and community, shaping the cultural landscape of cities such as Birmingham, Wolverhampton, London, Bristol, and Manchester.
This conference provides a unique opportunity for musicians, academics, sound system operators, promoters, cultural historians, and reggae enthusiasts to come together and examine how reggae developed in Britain and how it continues to inspire new generations.
Exploring the Legacy of British Reggae
The event will highlight the important role reggae has played in shaping Black British culture, particularly through the influence of sound system culture, dancehall spaces, independent record labels, and grassroots community networks.
Through discussions and interactive workshops, participants will explore how reggae became a platform for storytelling, political commentary, and social change while also becoming a globally recognised cultural movement.
Workshops and Discussions
The conference will feature a series of engaging workshops addressing key issues and opportunities within the British reggae scene:
• Developing British Reggae as a Global Brand
Exploring how the UK reggae sound can be promoted internationally while preserving its cultural roots.
• Sound System, Dancehall and Barriers to the Future
Examining the challenges faced by traditional sound systems and how the culture can adapt for future generations.
• Marketing, Promotion, Funding and the Next Generation
Addressing the practical realities of sustaining reggae events, artists, and labels in today’s music industry.
• Nurturing Young Talent
Discussing pathways for emerging artists, producers, and musicians entering the reggae scene.
• Gender Equality in Reggae
Highlighting the role of women in reggae and exploring ways to create a more inclusive and equitable industry.
A Space for Learning, Networking and Celebration
Held at The Bank in Wolverhampton, the conference will run from 1:30pm to 8:30pm, offering attendees an opportunity to connect, exchange knowledge, and celebrate the rich legacy of British reggae music.
Whether you are an artist, researcher, sound system operator, promoter, student, or simply a lover of reggae music, this event provides a valuable space to reflect on the past, engage with the present, and help shape the future of British reggae.
