Vanessa Brown OBE A Legacy of Service, Faith and Community
Vanessa Brown OBE was a devoted leader, advocate, and woman of faith whose life and work left an unforgettable mark on Wolverhampton and beyond. Her sudden passing in March 2024 at the age of 40 was met with deep shock and sorrow, but her legacy continues to inspire. Through her tireless service, her music and worship, and her work for justice, Vanessa touched lives across the city and today her name lives on through The Vanessa Legacy Walk Wolverhampton.
Recognition for Outstanding Service
In the 2020 New Year Honours, Vanessa was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE). This recognition celebrated her outstanding contribution to the Windrush Reform Programme, where she went above and beyond to support members of the Windrush generation who had been unjustly affected by the immigration scandal. Her achievements included:
- Supporting over 2,000 people affected by the Windrush scandal, guiding them to access their rights under the Windrush Scheme.
- Preventing at least seven wrongful deportations, ensuring that people were properly referred to the Home Office taskforce and issued correct documentation.
- Organising community events, including a major outreach gathering at the Wolverhampton Heritage Centre, where 120 people directly received support.
Facilitating access by arranging for the Home Offices Commonwealth Taskforce to attend her church in Birmingham, enabling more than 2,000 people to get information and help.
Alongside her Windrush work, her OBE also recognised her compassion for vulnerable communities in the West Midlands. Vanessa personally helped to feed homeless people, distributed sleeping bags, and provided basic medical support and first aid to those in need.
Deep Roots in Faith and Community
Born and educated in Wolverhampton, Vanessa was active in local churches throughout the city and in Bilston. She became a familiar face in choirs and praise teams, using her gift for music to uplift congregations and bring people together.
Her sister Maria remembered:
"Vanessa lived for Jesus and used her gifts of music and worship to impact the world. She was passionate about music and the church, and everything she did flowed from her faith."
Vanessa's community service reflected this faith. She saw worship not only as music but as action feeding the hungry, comforting the vulnerable, and lifting up those whose stories were too often overlooked.
Voices of Impact
While statistics measure the scale of her work, the truest measure of Vanessa s impact lies in the lives she touched. Local residents, church members, and people she supported through the Windrush Scheme shared reflections such as:
"Because of Vanessa, I was able to sort out my documents and no longer live in fear of deportation." Wolverhampton resident helped through the Windrush programme.
"She always listened when no one else would." She made me feel heard and valued. Community member supported at a Heritage Centre event.
"Her presence in the choir lifted me every Sunday. Her joy was infectious". Fellow worshipper in Bilston
These voices echo across Wolverhampton: stories of relief, hope, and encouragement from those Vanessa guided, comforted, or simply cheered with her warm presence.
The Vanessa Legacy Walk Wolverhampton
To honour her life and ensure her vision lives on, the Wolverhampton City Trail has been renamed:
The Vanessa Legacy Walk Wolverhampton.
This trail is more than just a route through the city. It is a living memorial a celebration of Wolverhampton s diversity, resilience, and history, all values Vanessa championed. It also highlights the contributions of the Windrush generation and the communities she worked so passionately to support.
