Tracing Your Family History

Many of us share a natural curiosity about where we come from and a desire to uncover the stories of our families. Tracing ancestry can be both fascinating and rewarding, but it is not always easy—particularly for those whose family roots lie outside the UK. The process often requires time, patience, and guidance, especially when family knowledge is limited or no longer available.

The Genealogy Group is launching a new project in Wolverhampton designed to provide practical, hands-on support for anyone interested in discovering their family history. Through shared experience, useful tips, and step-by-step guidance, we aim to make tracing ancestry more accessible and enjoyable. We welcome enthusiastic individuals who would like to get involved and help others on their journey of discovery.

The Solihull Caribbean Family History Group

Serving Solihull, Birmingham, and the Black Country

Our group supports newcomers and experienced researchers alike in exploring their family trees. Over the years, we’ve helped many people start from scratch and go on to find records of parents and grandparents—moments that are always deeply meaningful and rewarding. Alongside helping others, we also continue to research and develop our own family histories.

What We Do

  • Guide members in searching for ancestors and building family trees.
  • Provide support for Jamaican ancestry research, including locating births and marriages online.
  • Offer monthly “hands-on” sessions where members actively search records with our help. When resources are available—whether online or on microfilm—we aim to ensure a productive and successful experience.

Microfilm Collection

We have built a valuable collection of index microfilms covering key Caribbean islands, obtained from the Latter-Day Saints Church. These are available locally in the Solihull/Midlands area and include records from:

  • Anguilla
  • Barbados
  • Grenada
  • Jamaica
  • Nevis
  • St. Kitts

(Please note: Index microfilms help identify where to look within register microfilms, which contain the original birth, marriage, and death certificates.)

If you see islands relevant to friends or family, please share this resource with them.
