Wolverhampton’s Famous Sons and Daughters – MG Building, Wulfruna Street

1. A Stage for Icons

Standing tall on Wulfruna Street is the MG Building—a canvas for the city's most celebrated locals. Among its most striking tributes is a vibrant mural of Beverley Knight, Wolverhampton’s reigning soul star, vividly captured by local artist Graffiti For U

When Knight visited the mural in 2025 during a break from her stage performance, she was visibly moved, expressing that she was "overwhelmed" and finding it hard to put into words how meaningful the homecoming was.

2. Beverley Knight – The Icon Honoured

Beverley Knight’s journey from local beginnings to national stardom makes her a powerful symbol of creative excellence and cultural pride. The mural facing Wulfruna Street visually cements her in the city’s core—an acknowledgment of her music, influence, and emotional connection to Wolverhampton.

3. Denise Lewis – Sporting Legend

Though no mural has yet been recorded on the MG Building, Wolverhampton’s Golden Girl, Denise Lewis, remains a source of immense pride. A celebrated heptathlon champion and Olympic gold medallist, she represents athletic excellence—and for many, a parallel icon to Beverley Knight.

If the MG Building ever honors her visually, it would powerfully connect two realms—music and sport—in Wolverhampton’s public tribute landscape.

4. What These Tributes Mean

  • Recognition of Excellence: These visual landmarks highlight the city’s respect for Black creative and sporting achievement.
  • Anchoring Identity: By placing these figures on a prominent city façade, Wolverhampton asserts their place in public memory and local pride.
  • Inspiration for Generations: These artworks serve as daily reminders and inspiration—showing young people that success can grow from home soil.

5. The Scene Today

The mural of Beverley Knight remains a celebrated feature of Wulfruna Street, drawing locals and visitors alike to pause and reflect on the legacy of one of the city’s most cherished cultural figures.

In the future, a visual recognition of Denise Lewis on the same building would create a compelling, dual homage to Wolverhampton’s exceptional Black talent across disciplines.
